The mission of our chapter is to honor our military by increasing awareness. Our goal is to provide an extra measure of support to our troops. In addition, it is our hope to offer an emotional lift to military families as they become acquainted with a wider network of folks who care about them.
During World War I, a captain, who had two sons fighting in the trenches in Europe, devised the first blue star pennant that was placed in the captain’s window to honor his sons’ service to our country.
In World War II, mothers, whose sons or daughters served in the military, placed the blue star flag in their window to display pride in their child’s patriotism and defense of our nation. During the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, the use of these flags waned.
In 1960, Congress officially established the Blue Star Mothers of America. The use of the blue star flags resumed with the Persian Gulf War and has increased since September 11, 2001.
Currently, the flag is appropriately displayed by any parent or spouse of a service man or woman.
